SInce the inception of EM as a bona fide specialty in the house of medicine, emergency physicians have provided medical direction, oversight, and training to affiliated services. Residents interested in experiencing the administrative side of EM operations will have the opportunity to partner with one of AGH's affiliated entities. The Assistant Medical Director (AMD) will be given additional responsibilities for an operational EMS program and assist the current EMS medical directors and fellows with job duties. Successful completion of the AMD program will depend upon a review of job performance and EMS provider evaluations. AMD candidates must successfully fulfill PA state requirements including: (1) credentialing as a command physician and (2) designation as a Prehospital Physician (PHP). The following "deliverables" are expected of residents in the AMD program:
1. Review and revision of EMS protocols:
Residents will scrutinize current prehospital protocols and compare them with existing practice patterns and literature. The AMD will submit at least one novel or revised protocol to the EMS authorities for possible implementation. Resident AMDs can examine LifeFlight, ALS, or BLS prehospital protocols.
2. Delivery of educational outreach program:
AMDs will create, revise, or deliver at least one continuing education activity for EMS providers. AMDs can participate in LifeFlight case reviews or work with their affiliated service to complete training.
3. Completion of PHP program:
AMDs will review basic emergency medical technician skills and pass the evaluation for the PA Prehospital Physician designation.
4. Complete additional, "supervisory" ride a longs with affiliated EMS services:
AMDs will participate in physician response ride a longs (once appropriately oriented and trained) and complete additional ride alongs with a field training officer or supervisor.
